Event Details

The Baldwin City Recreation Commission welcomes you to the annual Smoke on the Bricks BBQ, powered by Rice Precision Manufacturing! This Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned competition is a qualifying event for the American Royal World Series of Barbecue and the Jack Daniels World Championship. Friday evening the general public is welcome to come out and hang with their friends and families for the evening from 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Live music will be onsite, beer and wine will be for sale and be sure to purchase your BBQ Bucks to sample world class BBQ Friday evening!

Formal BBQ judging will begin on Saturday in the categories of chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. NEW this year, is the National Steak Championship! There are sausage and dessert categories again as well. Top 10 overall as well as top 10 in each category will win prize money, top 3 for each sausage and dessert. Total purse currently sits at $11,000.

Buffalo Soldier Monument

The Buffalo Soldier Monument, the brainchild of General Colin Powell, is a recent addition to Fort Leavenworth's historic landmarks. Dedicated in 1992, the monument honors the African-American soldiers who served in the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments.

French Cannons

These beautiful artifacts of bygone wars remain a mystery at Fort Leavenworth. They were cast in the 1700s in Paris; the name of the foundryman and place and date of manufacture are on each piece. How or why they came to Leavenworth is unknown.

Main Parade Ground

The main parade ground was originally the center of post activities. Post reviews and parades were held here during negotiations with federal officials in the 1800s.

National Cemetery

Designated a National Cemetery by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 along with eleven others, military graves date back to 1846. Today, more than 20,000 veterans representing every war since 1812 are buried in the cemetery. Two soldiers from Operation Desert Storm were interred here in 1991.

General Grant's Statue

Sculpted by Loredo Taft, in 1889, the statue and the pedestal are 9 feet tall each. It was the largest statue of its type in the Midwest when it was installed.
